At a two hour drive from La Fortuna we visit the Tenorio volcano national park. After some hiking we will get to the Rio Celeste (Blue River). The blue color you can see is the result of a chemical reaction between two merging rivers containing different volcanic minerals. (Foto tenideros) It’s a very rare phenomenon which creates a fairytale- like beauty. The hike itself is medium tough and takes about 3 hours. It will take you to a stunningly beautiful waterfall, a high lookout point overseeing a large part of the Tenorio Park and you get to the place where the river changes its color.
Walking alongside the river you can see small blue lakes and at points you can see smoking hot bubbles revealing the ever present volcanic activity. With the help of the guide there is a good possibility of seeing wildlife. All though rare, it is one of the best places to a run into the huge Dantas aka Tapirs, the biggest mammal in Costa Rica that sometimes chooses the river to take a refreshing plunge. Besides the park visit the guides often stop on various points on the way to show wildlife of explain about other interesting things. A visit to the enormous La Paz tree is part of this, and a stop to allow for swimming in the beautiful blue water of the river is also included.
We will stop at soda Irma for a homemade typical style lunch made from fresh locally grown ingredients presented with love and pride by Doña Irma. After all of this we will on our drive back, know our driver will only see tired but satisfied faces in his rearview mirror.
Note: The itinerary is subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors. Hard rain can change the color of the river and make the tour less enjoyable. We check conditions before we leave. In case it is clear from the get go the weather isn’t favorable we can choose to cancel with full refund. In case of doubt we will involve you in the decision. Once on our way and entrances have been paid there can be no refunds.
